Post-Operative Instructions: Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth removal is a common oral surgery procedure. Following these post-operative instructions will help you heal comfortably and avoid complications.
Bleeding
- Bite firmly on gauze pads for 30 to 45 minutes after surgery. Replace with fresh gauze as needed.
- Light oozing and blood-tinged saliva are normal for 24 to 48 hours.
- If bleeding is heavy, place a moistened tea bag directly over the surgical site and bite down firmly for 30 minutes.
- Avoid spitting, rinsing vigorously, or using straws for the first 24 hours.
Swelling & Bruising
- Swelling is normal and typically reaches its peak 48 to 72 hours after surgery.
- Apply ice packs to the outside of your face — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off — during the first 48 hours to help minimize swelling.
- Some bruising may appear on the face or neck and will resolve on its own over 7 to 10 days.
Pain Management
- Begin taking prescribed pain medication before the numbness wears off.
- Over-the-counter ibuprofen may be taken as directed to help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
- If prescribed antibiotics, take the full course as directed even if you feel better.
- Do not take aspirin, as it can promote bleeding.
Diet
- Start with clear liquids and progress to soft foods as tolerated — smoothies (no straw), yogurt, soup, scrambled eggs, and mashed potatoes.
- Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or very hot foods for at least 5 to 7 days.
- Do not eat anything that could leave particles in the surgical site (popcorn, rice, seeds).
- Stay well hydrated.
Oral Hygiene
- Do not brush near the surgical sites for the first 24 hours. You may gently brush your front teeth.
- After 24 hours, begin gentle warm salt water rinses (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) after meals and before bed.
- If you were given an irrigating syringe, begin using it 5 to 7 days after surgery to keep the lower extraction sites clean.
Activity & Lifestyle
- Rest with your head elevated for the first 2 to 3 days.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and bending over for 5 to 7 days.
- Do not smoke or use tobacco products for at least 1 week. Smoking dramatically increases the risk of dry socket.
- Avoid alcohol while taking prescription pain medications.
